My visit to the El Rosario Monarch Sanctuary in Michoacán, Mexico, took place on February 13th. It was truly unforgettable.There were countless Monarchs, and when the sun emerged, they lifted into the air, flying and swirling gracefully above our heads.Members of our tour group were the first to create paper butterflies.I left art materials at the visitor centre so that future visitors could decorate and write messages on the butterflies, which will later be sent to me in Canada.
Mi visita al Santuario de la Mariposa Monarca El Rosario, en Michoacán, México, fue el 13 de febrero. Fue verdaderamente inolvidable. Había incontables mariposas monarca y, cuando el sol apareció, se elevaron en el aire, volando y girando con gracia sobre nuestras cabezas. Los integrantes de nuestro grupo fueron los primeros en crear mariposas de papel. Dejé materiales artísticos en el centro de visitantes para que quienes visiten el santuario puedan decorar y escribir mensajes en las mariposas, las cuales posteriormente me serán enviadas a Canadá.
A Night of Connection and Community/Una noche de conexión y comunidad - March 22-26.
On Sunday, March 22nd, following Spanish Mass, Carried Together brought community members together in Leamington for a heartfelt evening of art, storytelling, and connection. With over 70 participants, the space was filled with warmth, openness, and a true sense of belonging. Live music added to the welcoming and joyful atmosphere.Participants created Monarch butterflies, each one carrying a personal story — reflections of family, sacrifice, hope, and dreams. These will become part of a larger installation connecting voices from Leamington, local schools, and communities in Mexico.I am deeply grateful for the support that made this evening possible. Sincere thanks to St. Michael's Church Leamington for hosting, the Catholic Women's League of Leamington for providing food, and the Comunidad Mexicana Leamington Cultural Group for their care and volunteer support. Thank you also to the Roman Catholic Diocese of London and TeaMWork from Workforce Canada for their generous gift of backpacks to temporary workers. More than anything, what stood out was the willingness of participants to share their stories — a powerful reminder that, even across distance and difference, we are connected.With gratitude, I look forward to bringing all of these butterflies together this October at the Migration Festival in Kingsville.
El domingo 22 de marzo, después de la misa en español, Carried Together reunió a la comunidad en Leamington para una noche llena de emoción, arte y conexión. Con más de 70 participantes, el espacio se llenó de calidez, apertura y un verdadero sentido de pertenencia. La música en vivo creó un ambiente alegre y acogedor.Los participantes crearon mariposas Monarca, cada una llevando una historia personal — reflejos de familia, sacrificio, esperanza y sueños. Estas formarán parte de una instalación más grande que conectará voces de Leamington, escuelas locales y comunidades en México.Estoy profundamente agradecida por el apoyo que hizo posible esta noche. Un sincero agradecimiento a St. Michael's Church Leamington por recibirnos, a la Catholic Women's League of Leamington por compartir los alimentos, y a la Comunidad Mexicana Leamington Cultural Group por su dedicación como voluntarios. Venvi Retirement Leamington - April 9th/2026
On Thursday, April 9th, the Carried Together project visited Venvi Retirement in Leamington, Ontario. I shared my interest in the Monarch butterfly, my artwork, and my experience visiting the sanctuaries in Mexico, along with photos of the life cycle—something that always feels like a small miracle. Residents shared their stories while creating their own butterflies, reflecting a strong sense of community and the sacrifices made for family. Thank you to all who participated—I look forward to seeing these butterflies come together in October at the Migration Festival in Kingsville, Ontario.
El jueves 9 de abril, el proyecto Carried Together visitó Venvi Retirement en Leamington, Ontario. Compartí mi interés por la mariposa Monarca, mi obra artística y mi experiencia en los santuarios de México, junto con fotos de su ciclo de vida, que siempre se siente como un pequeño milagro. Los residentes compartieron sus historias mientras creaban sus propias mariposas, reflejando una conexión comunitaria y los sacrificios por la familia. Gracias a todos los que participaron—espero ver estas mariposas reunidas en octubre en el Festival de la Migración en Kingsville, Ontario.
Mount Carmel Blytheswood Public School, May 4th, 2026
At Mount Carmel - Blytheswood Public School, Andrea Niven collaborated with Bea La Torre to present the Carried Together project to the school’s student leadership team, the Wave Makers. Inspired by the migration and life cycle of the Monarch butterfly, the project encourages students to reflect on connection, community, and shared responsibility. The Wave Makers will bring the project into classrooms by introducing its message, helping students decorate paper Monarch butterflies, and inviting them to share personal messages of hope, kindness, and belonging.
En Mount Carmel - Blytheswood Public School, Andrea Niven colaboró con Bea La Torre para presentar el proyecto Carried Together al equipo de liderazgo estudiantil de la escuela, conocido como los Wave Makers. Inspirado en la migración y el ciclo de vida de la mariposa Monarca, el proyecto invita a los estudiantes a reflexionar sobre la conexión, la comunidad y la responsabilidad compartida. Los Wave Makers llevarán el proyecto a las aulas, donde explicarán su significado, ayudarán a los estudiantes a decorar mariposas Monarca de papel e invitarán a compartir mensajes de esperanza, amabilidad y pertenencia.
La instalación final del proyecto comunitario Carried Together, creado por la artista Andrea Niven de Bear Foot Studios, se presentará el sábado 17 de octubre de 2026, como parte del Festival de Migración de Kingsville, en el espacio verde del Carnegie en Kingsville. The final installation of the community-based project Carried Together, created by artist Andrea Niven of Bear Foot Studios, will be on exhibit on Saturday, October 17, 2026, during the Kingsville Migration Festival at the Carnegie Green Space in Kingsville. The installation will bring together hundreds of community-created Monarch butterflies, celebrating migration, connection, and the shared stories that unite us.

It was wonderful to see so many people decorate monarch butterflies and share beautiful messages of hope and connection. On July 15, I was honoured to be the guest speaker at the Art Society of Kingsville's Annual General Meeting, where I shared my Carried Together community art project inspired by the Monarch butterfly. Following the presentation, members decorated paper Monarch butterflies and added messages of hope and belonging. Their beautiful creations will become part of the collaborative installation at the 2026 Kingsville Migration Festival. Thank you to the Art Society of Kingsville for your warm welcome and enthusiastic participation!
El 15 de julio, tuve el honor de ser la invitada especial y conferencista en la Asamblea General Anual de la Art Society of Kingsville, donde compartí mi proyecto artístico comunitario Carried Together, inspirado en la mariposa monarca. Andrea Niven of Bear Foot Studios was invited to share her community Monarch butterfly project, Carried Together, at the Point Pelee National Park Visitor Centre on Saturday, September 12th and Sunday, September 13th. Many local community members and visitors from surrounding areas enthusiastically took part, adding their butterflies and personal stories to this beautiful project celebrating the migration of the Monarch butterfly and the connections that bring us together as a community.

Collaborative Mural - Mural Colaborativo
Forty artists. Forty unique perspectives. One shared story. On September 16, 40 artists gathered at the AMA Sportsmen Club in Amherstburg as part of Carried Together. Each artist painted a 6 × 6-inch panel, interpreting themes of migration, nature, community, Canada and Mexico, connection, and transformation in their own unique way. Together, these individual panels will frame the larger mural painted by Andrea Niven, creating a collective expression of connection and community. Come celebrate the unveiling on October 17, 2026, when the completed mural comes together for the first time as an outdoor art installation on the Carnegie Green Space during the Migration Festival in Kingsville, Ontario. Join us as we celebrate the artists, the stories they’ve shared, and the connections that bring our communities together.
Cuarenta artistas. Cuarenta perspectivas únicas. Una historia que compartimos. El 16 de septiembre, 40 artistas se reunieron en el AMA Sportsmen Club de Amherstburg como parte de Carried Together. Cada artista pintó un panel de 6 × 6 pulgadas, interpretando libremente temas como la migración, la naturaleza, la comunidad, la conexión entre Canadá y México, y la transformación. Carried Together: A Celebration of Community
Una Celebración de la Comunidad
On October 17, Carried Together reached its beautiful conclusion with a final installation at Carnegie Green Space during the Kingsville Migration Festival.Inspired by the extraordinary migration of the Monarch butterfly, this community art project brought people together through 1,500 decorated butterflies and a collaborative mural, sharing messages of hope, kindness, gratitude, and belonging.The installation was a wonderful success, welcoming many visitors who came to experience the display and celebrate the stories behind the artwork.As the artist behind Carried Together, I am deeply grateful to everyone who helped bring this project to life. I began this journey inspired by the Monarch butterflies, but it was the people I met along the way who made it truly unforgettable. Together, we created more than art; we created a celebration of the connections that unite us.
El 17 de octubre, Carried Together llegó a su momento culminante con una instalación muy especial en Carnegie Green Space, como parte del Festival de la Migración de Kingsville.Inspirado en el increíble viaje de las mariposas monarca, este proyecto de arte comunitario reunió a personas de todas las edades a través de 1,500 mariposas decoradas a mano y un mural creado en colaboración. Cada mariposa y cada parte del mural reflejan mensajes de esperanza, bondad, gratitud y unión.La instalación fue todo un éxito y recibió a muchos visitantes que vinieron a disfrutar de la exhibición y conocer las historias detrás de las obras.Como artista que dio vida a Carried Together, me siento profundamente agradecida con todas las personas que participaron y apoyaron este proyecto.
