The Journey Has Begun/El viaje ha comenzado

My visit to the El Rosario Monarch Sanctuary in Michoacán, Mexico, took place on February 13th. It was truly unforgettable.There were countless Monarchs, and when the sun emerged, they lifted into the air, flying and swirling gracefully above our heads.Members of our tour group were the first to create paper butterflies.I left art materials at the visitor centre so that future visitors could decorate and write messages on the butterflies, which will later be sent to me in Canada.
Mi visita al Santuario de la Mariposa Monarca El Rosario, en Michoacán, México, fue el 13 de febrero. Fue verdaderamente inolvidable. Había incontables mariposas monarca y, cuando el sol apareció, se elevaron en el aire, volando y girando con gracia sobre nuestras cabezas. Los integrantes de nuestro grupo fueron los primeros en crear mariposas de papel. Dejé materiales artísticos en el centro de visitantes para que quienes visiten el santuario puedan decorar y escribir mensajes en las mariposas, las cuales posteriormente me serán enviadas a Canadá.
A Night of Connection and Community/Una noche de conexión y comunidad - March 22-26.
On Sunday, March 22nd, following Spanish Mass, Carried Together brought community members together in Leamington for a heartfelt evening of art, storytelling, and connection. With over 70 participants, the space was filled with warmth, openness, and a true sense of belonging. Live music added to the welcoming and joyful atmosphere.Participants created Monarch butterflies, each one carrying a personal story — reflections of family, sacrifice, hope, and dreams. These will become part of a larger installation connecting voices from Leamington, local schools, and communities in Mexico.I am deeply grateful for the support that made this evening possible. Sincere thanks to St. Michael's Church Leamington for hosting, the Catholic Women's League of Leamington for providing food, and the Comunidad Mexicana Leamington Cultural Group for their care and volunteer support. Thank you also to the Roman Catholic Diocese of London and TeaMWork from Workforce Canada for their generous gift of backpacks to temporary workers. More than anything, what stood out was the willingness of participants to share their stories — a powerful reminder that, even across distance and difference, we are connected.With gratitude, I look forward to bringing all of these butterflies together this October at the Migration Festival in Kingsville.
El domingo 22 de marzo, después de la misa en español, Carried Together reunió a la comunidad en Leamington para una noche llena de emoción, arte y conexión. Con más de 70 participantes, el espacio se llenó de calidez, apertura y un verdadero sentido de pertenencia. La música en vivo creó un ambiente alegre y acogedor.Los participantes crearon mariposas Monarca, cada una llevando una historia personal — reflejos de familia, sacrificio, esperanza y sueños. Estas formarán parte de una instalación más grande que conectará voces de Leamington, escuelas locales y comunidades en México.Estoy profundamente agradecida por el apoyo que hizo posible esta noche. Un sincero agradecimiento a St. Michael's Church Leamington por recibirnos, a la Catholic Women's League of Leamington por compartir los alimentos, y a la Comunidad Mexicana Leamington Cultural Group por su dedicación como voluntarios. Venvi Retirement Leamington - April 9th/26
On Thursday, April 9th, the Carried Together project visited Venvi Retirement in Leamington, Ontario. I shared my interest in the Monarch butterfly, my artwork, and my experience visiting the sanctuaries in Mexico, along with photos of the life cycle—something that always feels like a small miracle. Residents shared their stories while creating their own butterflies, reflecting a strong sense of community and the sacrifices made for family. Thank you to all who participated—I look forward to seeing these butterflies come together in October at the Migration Festival in Kingsville, Ontario.
El jueves 9 de abril, el proyecto Carried Together visitó Venvi Retirement en Leamington, Ontario. Compartí mi interés por la mariposa Monarca, mi obra artística y mi experiencia en los santuarios de México, junto con fotos de su ciclo de vida, que siempre se siente como un pequeño milagro. Los residentes compartieron sus historias mientras creaban sus propias mariposas, reflejando una conexión comunitaria y los sacrificios por la familia. Gracias a todos los que participaron—espero ver estas mariposas reunidas en octubre en el Festival de la Migración en Kingsville, Ontario.
